Turmeric

Turmeric aids in inhibiting the development of osteoarthritis and also helps to provide relief in the painful conditions. In India it is called as the haldi. Medicinal properties of turmeric are famous in Ayurveda since ages to manage the osteoarthritis naturally. Curcumin is a bioactive compound present in turmeric that comprises the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These properties help to lessen the pain and improve the joint functions.

How to use

Take one teaspoon of turmeric powder in milk twice daily.

Cinnamon

It is a famous natural ingredient to manage the osteoarthritis.  Being packed with the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties it helps to fight against the joint pain and swelling. It helps to relieve the stiffness in muscles.

How to use

Take one teaspoon of each of cinnamon powder and honey or you can take honey, 2 tsp. also so that it gets mixed properly. Have once or twice daily. Or you can also mix this in a glass of warm water. Consume iton an empty stomach every morning.

Alternatively make the paste of cinnamon powder in water. One can also add a little honey in it.  Massage with this mixture on the affected area for 3-5 minutes every day.

Epsom Salt

Epsom salt is an effective natural remedy for osteoarthritis.  Being a good source of magnesium it helps to reduce pain, swelling and inflammation.

How to use

    Add one and half cup of Epsom salt into warm bath water.

  1. Immerse in it for 20 to 30 minutes.
  2. Do it twice or thrice in a week until you observe some noticeable changes.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek seeds have vitamins and essential minerals like calcium, iron and phosphorus that are quite valuable for healthy bones and tissues. Fenugreek seeds are also packed with the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which help to alleviate the pain and swelling.

How to use

Take 1-2 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds and soak them in water for overnight.In the morning, strain the water and drink it on daily basis. Chewing seeds is optional.

Another option is one can consume the one teaspoon of fenugreek seed powder along with a glass of warm water twice daily.

Ginger

Use of ginger to manage the inflammatory conditions is famous in Ayurveda from many years.  Ginger makes an effective herbal treatment for osteoarthritis.It possesses the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that aid in reducing the pain, swelling and inflammation.  Moreover,   in various studies it has been found that ginger blocks a chemical, COX-2 in the body which causes the pain.

How to use

  •  Make the small pieces of ginger root.
  •  Boil them in water for 10-1e minutes.
  •  Strain it and add honey into it.
  •  Another option is one can chew some fresh garlic slices.
  •  Start using honey in your dishes.
  •  Doing the massage with garlic oil on affected areas is quite helpful to manage the pain.

Green Tea

In various studies it has been found that drinking green tea helps to delay the progression of osteoarthritis. It is loaded with the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help to lessen joint pain and swelling.  On the other hand, it supports the good bone health.

How to use

  • Add one teaspoon of green tea leaves into a cup of hot water.
  • Steep it for a few minutes.
  • Strain and add a little honey as per your taste
  • Drink 2 cups of green tea every day.

Hot and Cold Compresses

Using Hot and Cold Compresses is quite good in osteoarthritis. Hot compress may help to decrease pain and stiffness where as cold compress can help to lessen the swelling and inflammation.

How to use

  1. Tomake a hot compress, wrap the hot water bottle in a thin towel.
  2. Place the hot compress on the affected joints for 4-5 minutes.
  3. To make a cold compress, wrap the few ice cubes in a thin towel.
  4. Replace the hot compress with the cold compress and leave it only for 1 minute.
  5. Repeat it for 15 to 20 minutes a few times daily.
